Is Capital Punishment an Eye for an Eye??

We recently saw two capital punishments handed out by our judiciary.  One for betraying the country and attacking the parliament and the other for rape and murder.  The first case seems to be headed for clemency, what could be the grounds of the second case being rarest of rare??? Will not Santosh kumar singh ask for the same mercy shown to Afzal???  Is raping and murdering a woman more heinous than attacking the most sacred institution of our country??? These questions beg an answer.  Is capital punishment, an eye for an eye??? Will all of us have only one eye in the future becoz of this??? These are anti capital punishment activists’ stand.  But if criminals of these kind of heinous crimes are not brought to justice, can u discourage criminals from smaller crimes, in a society full of lawlessness???

I believe capital punishment should be delivered in both cases, so that when the next time people plot such heinous crimes, they should fear death.  Otherwise there will be many more Afzals and there will be many more Santosh Kumar Singhs.  In a country where following precedents is the norm, this is a terrible precedent being set up.  Countries like Singapore and Switzerland are crime free because of harsh punishments, and are progressive as well.  In a society where the gap between the rich and the poor is increasing, being lenient in law, will provide easy recourse for people to vent their frustrations.  While every effort should be made to provide equal educational opportunity to all, law must be upheld in the strictest possible sense of the term, if we want a civilized and just society.

We need to have zero tolerance for crime and terrorism so that life and property is protected at all cost.  Because where u have no security, there can be no progress or investment and hence no growth.  So stand up and be counted, demand death for both Afzal and Santosh Kumar Singh.  Those who kill deserve to die.  Those who are about to kill need to know the consequences.

Sorry that I missed this blog.
At first glance,I felt capitol punishment is good as long as the root cause has been justified (which I believe is the rarest of cases). I have my best belief for Indian government and the way it has been working till now.
btw, an eye for who's eye? if this is your's.... are you scared of guilty of crime? If this is a change for the better, I would suggest paying for he restoration of the other's eye or a settlement. I hope I am being clear.

Bru ads have always been good...with their signature neo-classical tune in south india. Elaichi tea is there in my office and finds a chance daily apart from hot chocolate n badam milk. N my way of making it...two small packets of sugar, 1 tea bag, press Tea on the machine to get the water+milk in the correct proportion and stir till I can drink it...guess it works out easier for me :) As for kaapi I pretty much avoid it and only take it in social situations where I can't refuse it or when I'm lounging out at Coffee Day when it becomes choco-ice cream-cold coffee!

Hey, thanks for the comments on my space. Yeah, I love Indian culture...you know, there's actually this store in my hometown where I used to buy a lot of bindis and jewelry. I have about 20 packs of bindis of different colors and shapes. The one thing I've always wanted was a saree...like the sarees on the Shaadi.com site (http://www.shaadi.com/). My favorite fashion designer would have to be Aapno Rajasthan.:) Anyways, nice blog entries. You seem to be really intelligent and quite open-minded; when I say open-minded, I mean you seem to be the type of person who doesn't badmouth and go on a ranting spree like some bloggers do. Take care, I'll visit soon. I have college work to do.:P

Temple town living is definitely quite different from city life as we know it. As for Delhi and the masterplan, they should have taken action when they first saw the violations and not 30-40 years after everything's been done and even taxes paid. Hope they dont keep stirring the troublesome brew and do something to cool down the flames for now!

No one should be above the law and the law should be applied uniformly. If we can do that with our present laws, that would suffice. We do not lack in laws and their interpretation, but implementation of the law is definitely an area we need to work on. As for the state of cricket, it's still a cloudless sky now and hope it is not so when the world cup draws nearby. Hope the weekend is peaceful after the problems of the recent strikes out there. Take care!

I am in favor of capital punishment but there are two problems with it. 1) It is not a deterrent to crime. 2) It is irreversible in case the law makes a mistake. The point for capital punishment is not that it will stop further crime. The whole premise of law is based on the assumption that punishment will deter people. It does not. If it did then crime would have ceased in the days of a guillotine. Having said that, once the crime has been established on grounds that admit no doubt, the criminal must not be allowed to live at the expense of tax payers. Execution is the way. I personally am more lenient to the man who offends the country rather than rapes a woman. The country can reconstitute the parliament, not the woman.

Weel, I'm for capital punishment too. But I approve of the debate against it to. It could make the judge think before he hands down a judgement...
