Is urban stress breaking down relationships?

Indians always were surprised at the rate of breaking down of American marriages and nevah cud understand why it happenned.  It happenned in Japan as well, where young women stopped getting married and the country's population growth plunged, so its not about western or eastern values, its about the price of success.  Its happenning more and more in our cities.  Despite having bigger cars and bigger houses, why aren't people happy??? Why are'nt people happier??? Is the price of success, breaking down of marriages and deteriorating health???

The reason is that the urban turmoil creates amazing frustration and negative energy in us.  This makes us let our steam out at home.  The relatively small issues become issue of big ego tussles and about man woman supremacy.  Its because people are too involved in the mess they created in their urge to be successful, that they forget to say and do those little nice things that built relationships.  Its coz they believe their dreams are bigger than their relationships.  Its becoz in their urge to win the rat race that we are running away from the very happiness that made us participate in the rat race.

So do we leave the rat race and lead ordinary lives? Will that bring back happiness? I think the forgotten word here is "contentment".  There needs to be a certain milestone in life, where a person needs to be satisfied with his achievments and look back at his life.  If u keep lookin for "more" and "better", the rat race will end someday, and so will a lot else.  9% growth needs infrastructure and needs healthy people.  We need to learn to balance material success and emotional stability.  I think our generation faces the tough job, of making the transition from age of starving for consumerism to the age of plenty in more ways than one.  The framework we develop will help our kids deal with a time of extraordinary opportunity and extraordinary challanges.

    What can be that framework????????

true indeed, Contentment is the key word as you pointed. but with todays surging consumerism and lifestyles, do parents and other adults have the framework to teach contentment, when themselves today have no traction on their monetary pursuits. Its an issue that is surely going to social catastrophy soon. Here is something i wrote on the same a while ago http://truezombiee.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!7F40A192D1AC2EEA!956.entry

Saw ur comment regarding Indian time just now....quite true that some folks try to keep others waiting to try and show their importance. All it does is show their pettiness in what they do...like rival captains being kept waiting for the toss before a match :) I guess the season of hot, hotter, hottest has hit home n it's time to run for the hills!

Good post...reminded me of a quote I heard from a friend, originally said by Mother Teresa: "Everybody today seems to be in such a terrible rush, anxious for greater developments & greater riches & so on, so that children have very little time for their parents. Parents have very little time for each other, & in the home begins the disruption of peace of the world."

Just a game it can't be for quite sometime...not till kids stop taking up a ball n a bat the moment they have time to spare. It's certainly time for the stars to cut down on ads and focus on the game so they gain back some credibility. In today's news, I saw a majority supporting the coach in his views vis a vis the senior players. Chalta hai attitude isn't gonna cut the ice here.

try Evolutionary theories from Darwin. May be you'd want to correct yourself.

There is another theory. In evolutionary terms a social structure needs to be TAUGHT to every generation if it is to survive. Ancient tribes were excellent at this and so were modern folks until around 60 years ago.

Some sociologists are now advocating that the social education of children has been given over to television. Adults no longer teach children how to function in society and it is this lack of education that causes families to break apart.

In India, the family has been the traditional anchor. However, India's new found love for individuality, fuelled by our modest economic growth is the putting a strain on the family.  For many, it gives an opportunity to break free from certain responsibilities and ties that were hard to disown earlier.

Each generation has its own bane to contend with. While we may think things get tougher and tougher, we forget that each generation develops its own coping mechanism to issues of its times. For example, earlier generations take up computers and the internet very slowly while the present generation takes to it like a duck takes to water. The rat race will always be there but hopefully the coping skills that come with growing as part of a particular generation equips us to fight troubles and enjoy life to the fullest...but of course, like in Japan, social mores and traditions are likely to get moulded to suit the needs of the current generation!

This is exactly what I tried to highlight in this entry of mine.

There is no framework to replace the one that is crumbling because no one is working on it. It is no longer consumerism, it is downright blatant and banal genetically encoded greed that is replacing what once comprised humanity.

Our society has only one message for us: Own everything.
Our industry has only one message for us: Spend to the max.
Our intelligence has only one purpose: To earn money to own and spend.
Our education has only one purpose: To teach us to earn to own and spend.
Our relationships are now built around one sentiment: To combine the strength to earn to own and spend.

    Sigh! Welcome to MBA hell.
